Installation & Deployment Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the difference between a Network copy and a Standalone copy?
A: Physically, nothing. The difference between Network and Standalone is the license. A Standalone license is activated through Autodesk and consists of one single activation. You can purchase multiple Standalone seats, but each seat is activated individually. A Network license will require the installation of the Autodesk Network License Manager (aka: LMTools or NLM). You will request and recieve a license file from Autodesk that LMTools will use to distribute the license.

Q: What is the difference between Installation and Deployment?
A: An installation means that you install the product on a single workstation. A deployment means that you create an "installation package" on a shared drive. Then each workstation installs the package from the shared location.

Q: Do I need a server to run the Autodesk Network License Manager?
A: No. You can run LMTools on any workstation that other Networked copies have access to. You can view the system requirements for installation of LMTools here.

Q: When I install a new version of Autodesk software, do I need to upgrade LMTools too?
A: Yes. The newest version of LMTools will serve licenses to any version of Autodesk products. Older versions sometimes will not serve licenses to newer versions of Autodesk products.

Q: Do I have to have a Network license to create a deployment?
A: No. You can create a Network Deployment or a Standalone Deployment. The only difference is how the product is licensed.

Q: Do I have to create a Network Deployment from a server?
A: No. A deployment can be created from any workstation that has access to a shared drive.

Q: How do I obtain a Network License File?
A: Autodesk has to provide the network license file. You can contact the Authorization Department at
1-800-551-1490 and a license file will be emailed to you, usually while you're still on the line.

Q: I'm getting License Errors, How do I know it's not the License File?
A: You can check your license file using the Autodesk License Parser, available here.
