How To: Obtain the DirectX Diagnostic File

There is a handy tool in Windows called DirectX Diagnostic Tool. It provides a lot of helpful information about a Windows system, such as processor, RAM, and video card information.

The Mid-West CAD Technical team may ask you for a copy of the information from this file, this is how you obtain it.

Basic Autodesk Subscription Software Tips and Reminders

Autodesk is moving its software from a perpetual license to a subscription based license.  With this change are a couple of items a Contract Coordinator or Software Coordinator needs to be aware of when installing the software.

A user must be assigned for the software you wish to install on their computer.  This is done with a company email address usually.  Once you have set up a user, you can then assign them the software they will need.  With AEC Collections, you can assign certain software or the whole collection.  The user will get a confirmation email stating they have been assigned access to the software.

Make sure your computer is up to date with the Operating System you are using.  This includes video cards and devices.

New Downloadable Content: Revit 2018.1 and 2018.2

As Autodesk moves forward, users won’t be seeing simple fixes as updates are released. Rather, Autodesk is incorporating new features and content, treating each update as a new product release.

However, when new content to support the updates is available, they are not incorporated within the update itself. Fortunately the content is available online. Here are two of the content updates released this year.

In Revit 2018.1, Autodesk incorporated new ready to use content, including cubicle families, parametric windows, and numerous others. See here for additional information and download:

Revit 2018.2 also added new content, including a system family library with walls, floors, ceiling, roofs, stairs and railings, also precast content and more. See here for additional information and download:

Keep an eye out with each update as they may add some useful content that you don’t want to miss.

How To: Work with Linked Files with Collaboration for Revit

First things first, you cannot yet work with any other file type except RVT files. So you cannot yet link in IFC files, DWG files or any other file type using Collaboration for Revit (C4R).

Now that that’s out of the way, how do you work with an architectural model with a linked structural model, for instance?

There are two scenarios I’ll work through here:

1: The Host model have not yet been added to BIM360 through C4R.

2: The Host model has been added to BIM360 through C4R.

Scenerio 1: The Host model has not yet been added to BIM360 through C4R

You’re going to need to add both files, so open the Host file (the file you’ll be linking the other file into) and send it up.

Open the model you’ll be linking in, and send it up.

Open the Host file from BIM360, and link in the 2nd file from the External References >BIM360\*PROJECTNAME*\ path.

Collaborate > Synchronize > Synchronize with Central.

Collaborate >Manage Cloud Models and Upload a new version of the Host file.

Done:

Scenario 2: The Host model has been added to BIM360 through C4R

In this case, you’ll upload the model you’d like to link to the BIM360 project through C4R.

Open the Host model from the BIM360 project. Open the Host file from BIM360, and link in the 2nd file from the External References >BIM360\*PROJECTNAME*\ path.

Collaborate > Synchronize > Synchronize with Central.

Collaborate >Manage Cloud Models and Upload a new version of the Host file.

Done.

Switch to Subscription: Network to Single User

It’s not enough that you’re changing the whole licensing model, you’re going to change the license type as well?!?

Okay, we’ll here’s your guide.

If you haven’t read our post outlining the general guidelines, the baseline of what you’ll need to know, and what you’ll need to do:

After that, you’ll hopefully have a little better understanding of what’s going on. If you’re here, you have (or had) Maintenance Network products, and are switching to Subscription Single-User products.

It’s extremely important that you get familiar with Autodesk Account. It’s where you’re going to manage your licenses.

Setting Up an Autodesk Account (Contract Manager/Software Coordinator)

Once you’ve added users and given those users permission to use your licenses, you’re ready to install your subscription software.

If you’re moving product to product, say – AutoCAD to AutoCAD, and the software you currently have running is version 2017 and/or newer, you’re in luck. All you’ll need to do is switch the license type to Sign-In, and you’ll be asked to sign-into the Autodesk Account. If the user account you’re signing in with has been granted access to the product you’re signing into, you’ll be granted access.

If you’re moving from a Suite to a Collection or downgrading to a product, for instance, going from a Suite to just Revit, you’re going to have to uninstall everything you’ve got… a complete re-install is needed here. For more information, check out this post:

First things first, you’re going to need to identify a license server. This doesn’t actually have to be a server, it just needs to be a network connected device that meets the following criteria:

Once you’ve identified the device, you’ll want to get LMTools installed and configured:

You’ll need a license file too. This is where the Autodesk Account information will come in handy. If you missed it in the General Guidelines post, you’ll want to get your Autodesk Account set up. That’s where you can request and obtain the license file for LMTools. Here’s how:

Once you have the network license manager set up and serving licenses, you’ll be ready to switch your products.

If you’re moving product to product, say – AutoCAD to AutoCAD, and the software you currently have running is version 2017 and/or newer, you’re in luck. All you’ll need to do is switch the license type to Use a Network License, and you’ll be asked for the License Server type and name(s). If you aren’t familiar, here are the network license models available:
